Knit It Yourself: Boot Socks

Winter is here, so that means it’s time for boot socks! And what better way to glam up a pair of jeans and boots than adding these pretty knit creations? Slip them under your mid-calf length boots and voila – you’re all dressed up for a day out on the (snowy) town! They’ll keep your feet warm and snuggly, too.

Skill Level: Intermediate

 

Woman’s Sock Size: 9-11

 

Materials:

 

Gauge:

9 sts + 12 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in St st (k every round) using Size 13 (9 mm) needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

 

Note: To make a men’s size, use a size larger needle

Directions for two socks:

Beg at top of sock, cast on 28 sts. Be sure not to twist yarn when joining, mark beg of rnd with a colored strand of yarn and join. Work around in k1, p1 rib for 8 rnds. Change to St st (k every row) and work even until 7″ from beg.

Next (dec) rnd K 6, k2tog, place marker, k 12, k2tog, place marker, k 6. Cont in St st, rep dec rnd every 4 rnds 4 times, dec 1 st before each marker – 20 sts rem. Work even until 12″ from beg, ending at beg of rnd.

Heel flap: Next row K 5, k 10 and place these 10 sts on holder for instep, k 5. Remove markers and work back and forth (p on WS, k on RS) for 3″, ending with a p row.

Heel turning: Row 1 K 5, k2tog tbl, k 2, turn.

Row 2 P 5, p2tog, turn.

Row 3 K 4, k2tog tbl, k 1, turn.

Row 4 P 4, p2tog, p 1, turn.

Row 5 K 3, k2tog tbl, k 1, turn.

Row 6 P across remaining 5 sts

Gusset and foot K across the 5 sts of heel turning, pick up and k 8 sts for heel gusset, place marker, k across 10 sts for instep, place marker, pick up and k 8 sts for heel turning, place marker – 31 sts. K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker, k 10 sts of instep, slip marker, k2tog tbl, k rem sts.

Next rnd K 1 rnd even. Rep these 2 rnds 6 times in all – 19 sts. Work even until foot measures 2″ less than final length.

Shape toe K to first marker, slip marker, k2tog tbl, k to within 2 sts of next marker, k2tog, slip marker, complete rnd

Next rnd K 1 rnd even. Rep these 2 rnds 3 times in all – 13 sts. Remove markers.

Last (dec) rnd K2tog, k 1, k2tog tbl, k2tog, k 1, k2tog tbl, k2tog, k 1 – 8 sts. Divide sts on 2 st holders; the upper and lower toe – 4 sts on each. Turn sock to WS. Mesh the sts onto a double pointed needle, alternating one from the upper and one from the lower, binding off 2 sts tog as if top across row.

p = purl

rem = remain(s)(ing)

rep = repeat(s)(ing)

rnd(s) = round(s)

RS = right side

st(s) = stitch(es)

St st = stockinette stitch

tbl = through back loop

tog = together

WS = wrong side
