Sew It Yourself: DIY Seasonal Wall Hanging Tutorial

We’ve seen a lot of wall art that features a word or phrase, and we wanted to create a DIY project that would showcase a special holiday sentiment. First, our stash. We sorted through our sewing lab to come up with something unique – what do you think about Dritz® cable cord and foldover braid trim? Pretty clever, eh? When sewn together the braided trim provides a nice rustic base for our art. The cable cord is flexible and long – it glues easily into place to construct our “word.” The result? Joyous DIY! Give it a try!

Materials:

Directions:

1) Cut six 13″ lengths of Dritz® foldover braid trim. Press flat with a steam iron.

Joy-1

2) Lay long edges of braid trim side by side and stitch together with a decorative stitch using tan thread. This will form a braid trim “fabric” that will become the base of your wall art.

Joy-2

3) Print the “joy” pattern (PDF file). To transfer the pattern to the braid trim base, tape the pattern to a window. Center the braid trim base on top of the pattern and tape it in place as shown.

Joy-3

4) Trace over the word “joy” with Dritz® tailor’s chalk. Remove both the braid trim base and pattern from your window.

Joy-4

5) Spray the front of the backing board from your frame with Dritz® spray adhesive. Lay the braid base on top of it, centering the word “joy”, and press with fingers to adhere. Wrap loose edges of the braid base around to the back of the board, and tape in place with masking tape as shown. Secure this piece in the picture frame.

Joy-5

6) Knot one end of Dritz® cable cord and fluff end as shown.

Joy-6

7) Starting with the letter “j,” apply a bead of Dritz® Liquid Stitch™ original fabric glue over the traced letters. Stop at the first place the cable cord will intersect. Lay cable cord in the glue. Use Dritz® T-pins to keep the cord in position until it begins to dry.

Joy-7

8) Continue to apply glue to the next intersection, then lay cord in glue as above.

Joy-8

9) Before applying glue to the last section, lay out cord to determine where the ending knot should be. Knot cable cord end and cut close to knot. Fluff loose ends. Apply glue and cord to finish lettering.

Joy-9

10) Now we’ll make the pom-pom to top the letter “j.” Cut four 1-1/2″ lengths of cable cord. Lay pieces side by side and tie centers together with thread. Wrap thread around centers as tight as possible before knotting.

Joy-10

11) Rub ends to fray cable cord. Trim pom-pom to 1″ diameter. Fluff, then glue to top of the letter “j.” Joy!

Now all you need to do is find the perfect place to display this festive creation – a mantle or picture ledge will do the trick! We made this wall hanging to celebrate the upcoming holiday season, but you can create your own word/words and make a personalized statement for everyday display. Now that’s what we call fun!
