Project Designer: Alexandra Henry

Create a set of four festive coasters with this Christmas-themed DIY sewing tutorial! They’ll look great around your table or in a friend’s stocking (try pairing them with a tasty beverage for a fun and thoughtful gift).

Materials:

Directions:

Step 1. Cut eight 4” squares of coaster/backing fabric. Cut four 4” squares each of Peltex Ultra-Firm and Vinyl-Fuse, and eight 4” squares of Lite EZ-Steam II.

Step 2. Print template. Trace the gingerbread man four times onto the gridded backing of a new sheet of the Lite EZ-Steam II. Rough cut the four templates apart. Peel away the opposite backing and finger press the sticky side against the wrong side of the appliqué fabric.

Step 3. Cut out the appliqué pieces. Peel the second paper backing away from one appliqué piece and finger press onto one background square. Repeat for the remaining three appliqué pieces.

Step 4. Remove the white backing from one 4” square of Lite EZ-Steam II. Finger press the sticky side to the wrong side of the background square. Remove the second backing and finger press the sticky side to one 4” square of Peltex. Fuse following manufacturer’s instructions. Repeat for remaining three background squares.

Step 5. Stitch around each gingerbread applique to finish the edge. Using contrasting thread, stitch decorative stitching on the arms and legs. Apply hot fix decorations for the gingerbread man’s face and buttons.

Step 6. Remove the white paper backing from the Lite EZ-Steam II 4” squares. Place one each on the wrong side of the backing squares and finger press in place.

Step 7. Remove the gridded backing from the Lite EZ-Steam II on the backing squares. Layer the backing and the front of the coasters, wrong sides together. Fuse following manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 7. Remove the paper backing from each 4” square of Vinyl-Fuse and finger press to the back of each coaster. Fuse following manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 8. Satin stitch around each coaster.
