Sew It Yourself: DIY Sewing Pattern Wreath

Got some extra sewing patterns and random sewing supplies lying around? Want to easily turn them into a wreath that looks great, and highlights your craft at the same time? Try this wreath! Its base is foam that’s then wrapped in burlap (easy enough!). It’s then covered with “flowers” made out of sewing patterns, and embellished with extra sewing baubles you’ve got stashed away (think extra buttons, snaps, etc.)

Materials Needed

Directions

1. Cut burlap into 2-1/2″ x 1-yard strips.

(Note: the number of strips you’ll need will be determined by how much you overlap them. We used 13 strips on our wreath.)

2. Zigzag stitch the edges of your strips so they don’t unravel. Then wrap the strips around the foam base and glue as you go.

3. Fold sewing patterns in half lengthwise and cut into 3″ strips.

(Note: pattern sizes vary greatly depending on the type. We cut 32 strips from 2 adult-sized patterns.)

4. Layer 2 paper strips (for thickness), fold a few times, and pink along the outside edges with your decorative edge scissors.

5. Unfold the 2 pieces (but keep layered) and make a running stitch down the center.

6. Ruffle the paper by gently pulling the bottom thread.

7. Once ruffled, wind into a flower and stitch to secure.

8. Using a tack hammer, carefully tap the floral pins until they puncture the paper. Push the pins the rest of the way in with your fingers.

9. Insert all the flowers and leave about a 5″ space at the bottom for the bow.

TIP: you can secure the flowers with hot glue to make sure they stay intact.

10. Glue your extra sewing supplies or other trinkets into the center of each flower. If desired, add a bow to the bottom of your wreath.

Are you ready to decorate that front door? What guest won’t be thrilled with your clever use of the extra sewing supplies you’ve got on hand? And who says this has to be a holiday-only wreath? The neutral color of the sewing patterns means this wreath can hang around long after the holidays have come and gone.
