Sew It Yourself: DIY Milky Way Placemats

I love blue and silver for Christmas and New Year parties, and when I saw Jen Sorenson’s Milky Way Block I knew it was going to be the “star” for my table setting this year and paper piecing such an easy  way to create these stars.

 

Fabric and Notions to complete 4 placemats:

Fat quarter  Piece 1 – dark blue
Fat quarter  Piece 2 – medium blue
Fat quarter  Piece 3 – white and silver dot
Fat quarter  Piece 4 – white on white print
Fat quarter  Piece 5 A – light blue
Fat quarter  Piece 5B- dark blue
-1 ¼ yard corners and borders same fabric as Piece 3 – white and silver dot
-1 ¼ yard backs
-1 yard batting
White thread
Sulky Paper Solvy™
Clover Press Perfect Iron Finger
Temporary spray adhesive

 

Preparation:
1. Print 8 of paper piecing pattern on Paper Solvy™.

2. Following the pattern cutting instructions cut 32 each Pieces 1,2,3, and 4.

3. Cut 16  Pieces 5A and 5B.

4. Cut 8 5 ½” squares for corners.

5. Cut 8 5″ x 9″ side borders.

6. Cut 8 2 ¾” x 18″ top and bottom borders.

7. Cut 4 14″ x 18″ batting.

8. Cut 4 18″x 22″ backing.

 

Paper pieced blocks:
1. Glue or tape a scrap of each color to the appropriate position on an extra paper pattern. This will make it easier to remember where each fabric goes during the construction process.

2. Place the wrong side of Piece 1 against the unprinted side of pattern.

3. Place paper under presser foot with lines up, sew just outside the lines of piece 1.

4. Fold paper on line and trim fabric ¼”.

5. Trim all three sides of Piece 1.

6. Place Piece 2 right sides together with Piece 1 lining up edges.

7. Place paper under presser foot with lines up, sew directly on line 2.

8. Fold fabric to right side and press with Iron Finger.

9. Fold paper back on line 4, trim fabric ¼”.

Your block will look like this from the fabric side.

10. Place Piece 3 right sides together with Piece 1 lining up edges.

11. Place paper under presser foot with lines up, sew directly on line 3.

 

12. Fold fabric to right side and press with Iron Finger.

13. Cut fabric on outside cutting line of pattern.

14. Place Piece 4 right sides together with Piece 2 lining up edges.

15. Place paper under presser foot with lines up, sew directly on line 4.

 

16. Fold fabric to right side and press with Iron Finger.

17. Fold paper back on line 5, trim fabric ¼”.

18. Place Piece 5B right sides together with Piece 4 lining up edges. Sew on line five.

19. Fold fabric to right side and press with Iron Finger.

 

20. Cut fabric on outside cutting line of pattern.

 

21. Make 16 blocks.

 

 

Make stars:
1. Sew one side A and one side B together with ¼” seam.

2. Sew 8 star halves.

3. Sew 2 halves together, to make 4 stars.

4. Cut 5 ½” squares on diagonal to make 16 half square triangles.

 

5. Line up point of half square triangle with center seam of star, right sides together.

6. Sew ¼” seam.

 

7. Open triangle and press.

 

8. Sew second half square triangle to next side.

9. Then sew half square triangles to remaining sides. 10.Square up block to 9″.

 

 

Placemat construction:
1. Sew 5″ x 9″ side borders to opposite sides of each block.

2. Sew 2 ¾” x 18″ top and bottom borders.

 

3. Use temporary spray adhesive to baste batting to placemat top.

 

4. Attach walking foot; lengthen stitch to 3mm.

 

5. Following shape of star, echo quilt placemat.

Use edge of foot as a guide for even spacing.

 

6. Center wrong side of placemat on wrong side of backing, use the temporary spray adhesive to hold in place.

 

7. Fold backing 1″ toward top around all four sides, press.

8. Fold backing 1″ again over top around all four sides, press.

9. Stitch self binding in place.
