This DIY holiday basket project makes a great vessel for homemade gifts! Whip up a few and fill them with your friends’ and family members’ favorite goodies this holiday season.
Supplies:
- 1 Package Wrights® Maxi Piping in coordinating color
- 26” of ¼” Wrights® Home Décor Cord in coordinating color
- 24” of Wrights® Home Décor Beaded Tassel Fringe
- 21” of Wrights® HGTV Pleated Twill Trim in coordinating color
- Fabric – ¾ of a yard of 3 different fabrics. (Consider pattern direction and weight when selecting fabrics. Sturdy fabrics such as canvas, home decorator or heavy twill will work well for outer fabric.)
- 1 ½ yards of Pellon® TP971F Fusible Fleece
- Fabric Glue
- Sewing Machine and Matching Thread
Cutting Instructions
- Large 8” Basket: Lay the outer fabric for the large 8” basket out on a flat surface and cut 1 piece 26” x 11”. Cut 1 circle 8 ¾”. Lay the lining fabric for the large 8” basket out on a flat surface and cut 1 piece 26” x 11”. Cut 1 circle 8 ¾”. Lay fusible fleece on a flat surface and cut a 25” x 9” piece and an 8” circle.
- Medium 7” Basket: Lay the outer fabric for the medium 7” basket out on a flat surface and cut 1 piece 24” x 11”. Cut 1 circle 7 ¾”. Lay the lining fabric for the medium 7” basket out on a flat surface and cut 1 piece 24” x 11”. Cut 1 circle 7 ¾”. Lay the fusible fleece on a flat surface and cut a 23” x 9” piece and a 7” circle.
- Small 6” Basket: Lay the outer fabric for the large 6” basket out on a flat surface and cut 1 piece 21” x 11”. Cut 1 circle 6 ¾”. Lay the lining fabric for the small 6” basket out on a flat surface and cut 1 piece 21” x 11”. Cut 1 circle 6 ¾”. Lay the fusible fleece on a flat surface and cut a 20” x 9” piece and a 6” circle.
Assembly Instructions:
- Begin with the large 8” basket pieces; place the 26” long piece of lining fabric on a flat surface with the wrong side up. Position the 25” long piece of fusible fleece (with the fusible side facing down) evenly over the lining fabric. Pin in place to move to ironing board and fusible fleece following package directions. Sew the 11” edge together with a 3/8” seam and iron seam open.
- Place the 8 ¾” lining piece on a flat surface with the wrong side up. Position the 8” circle of fusible fleece (with the fusible side facing down) evenly over the circle lining fabric. Pin in place to move to ironing board and adhere fusible fleece following package directions.
- Pin the circle piece with the fusible fleece to the tube, right sides facing. Use lots of pins to make sewing easier. Sew tube and circle together with a 3/8” seam. Turn right side out.
- Using the remaining pieces for the large 8” basket, sew the 26” piece into a tube along the 11” side with a 3/8” seam. Pin the circle piece to the tube, right sides facing. Use lots of pins to make sewing easier. Sew tube and circle together with a 3/8” seam. Turn right side out.
- Pin the two baskets together by placing right sides together. Sew top edge of circle leaving a 3” opening for turning. Turn right side out.
- Iron all edges flat and top stitch around top edge.
- Repeat steps 1-6 for the medium 7” basket and the small 6” basket
Detail Instructions
- To add the maxi piping to the bottom edge of a basket, stitch the piping to the bottom of the tube before stitching the tube and the bottom circle together in step 3.
- To add cord trim to the top edge of a basket, iron the top edges to the inside ¼”, position cord between lining and outer fabric, and stitch in place.
- Pleated twill trim is added to a completed basket edge by gluing or stitching trim in place along top stitch line. Position pleated twill trim so that it will be on the outside when the edge is folded down.
- Pleated twill trim is added to a completed baskets edge by gluing or stitching trim in place along edge once basket has been folded down.
